This Changes Everything: Salt & Light

The readings this week continue to point us – 21st century disciples – to the type of worship and witness that leads us into greater relationship with God and our neighbors. For the Israelites who have returned from Babylon, it’s not about idol worship.  It is about showing their light to others – by caring for the poor, the homeless, the hungry.  

Jesus continues with this theme in the Sermon on the Mount – describing the disciples as salt (bringing flavor and spice to others) and as light of the world – letting their lights so shine before others (hey – that’s what we tell the newly baptized!). Huh.  We are to be the ones going out where folks are hurting – bringing hte kingdom of heaven to them – as Christ was for us.
