Johnny Cash, Jesus, & the Rich Fool: Ring of Fire
This Sunday is the last in the series of the Gospel of Johnny Cash. And I think I saved the best one (or at least the one that gets stuck easiest).
The song ‘Ring of Fire” is one written about falling in love with someone – so much that it burns. June Carter Cash actually wrote it about falling in love with Johnny – but he turned it into a hit. Love burns, desires, and is wild.
It’s not just eros love that does that – but love of things like money, possessions, stuff. The Gospel lesson for today talks about a man who takes what he has and stores it for himself at a later time. He is called a fool by God – because his desire to keep the abundance for himself (as if he grew it not the land) is greater than the desire to do good for others.
This got Pastor Chris and I thinking – what do we do with our wealth after taxes, church giving, and saving (are you able to do any of that?) ? What about the disposable income that we have? Are we wild with desire to save or spend it for ourselves? What choices do we make?
It’s a hard lesson and I know that it’s more than a Sunday sermon’s discussion – but we’ll start. And we’ll also find the grace that love brings…to us and to all of creation.
Please join us for worship at 9 AM. We will sing, pray, worship, & share a meal of grace.
Whoever you are and wherever you find yourself in your journey, know that you are most welcome here.
Blessings,
Pastor Tina
