The Baptism of Jesus

The season of Epiphany begins on Friday with the celebration of the Three Kings visiting Jesus.  This visit signaled to the world that the Messiah came not jus for the Jewish people – but also for Gentiles and foreigners.  

And that changes everything…which is what the season of Epiphany demonstrates for us.  It is a time when we are introduced to Jesus as Messiah with a series of stories spanning Jesus’ baptism to the Transfiguration.  It’s also a time, as the body of Christ, to learn experience our own epiphanies.

The Gospel text this Sunday is Matthew’s telling of the Jesus’ baptism by John at the Jordan River.  The water and the Word made flesh come together, the heavens open, and God declares to Jesus, “This is my Son.”  It’s the beginning of Jesus’ ministry and his journey to the cross.  As the body of Christ, we too are claimed and sent on a journey of love and faithfulness in in uncertain time.

Come – all you faithful or you who are seeking – wherever you are on your journey.  You are invited and welcomed and beloved.
