Summer at the Movies: Week Two
Ever After:
This summer, we will use clips from movies, along with stories from our ancestors, to learn about God’s amazing steadfast love and the folks God chose to lead the way.
This week – we will focus on how God’s plan is not necessarily our plan. Jacob and Esau were the long awaited offspring of Isaac and Rebecca. While they were fraternal twins, in almost every way they were opposites and that created tension. Esau was born first and by cultural standards should inherit his father’s estate and blessing, but hunger and trickery change all of that.
The movie “Ever After” is retelling of the Grimm Brothers tale “Cinderella”. There are many ups and downs to this movie – Danielle’s idyllic life as a beloved daughter to servant and all the while struggling to come to terms with her father’s legacy and example…and how her life, and that of those around her, changes as the story progresses.
These two examples remind us that nothing is impossible for the One that sees and knows and loves. God’s plan extends beyond our desires and wants of this world into the ever after with all the saints.
Intrigued to know how this works out? Please join us for worship at 8 AM or 10:15 AM this week!.
See you in church!
Rise Up Together!
The 2015 National Youth Gathering of the ELCA will be in Detroit, MI, a city that is rising up out of job loss and bankruptcy. God is calling us to bring our hands and feet and hearts to this place.
If you missed the kickoff meeting for the NYG-Detroit – don’t be afraid. Pastor Tina has info packets put together. The crucial deadline date to be all in is August 1, 2014. That date is the all-in – with written confirmation and the first deposit of $100.00. Please contact me if you have any questions at all – including how we can help to subsidize your trip if necessary. (Official scholarship requests are due to the ELCA by July 15).
SEC Food Pantry:
The summer months for the food pantry remain busy. Along with normal food distribution, the pantry also provides supplemental kid appropriate breakfast and lunch items for those youngsters receiving free or reduced meals at school.
The food item of the month for SOTH is PASTA. Always needed and appreciated are donations of paper towels, toilet paper and hygeine items (deodorant, toothpaste, feminine products, etc).
The Kids Program accepts the following: single serve meals (like ravioli), pasta sauce, tuna, cans of soup, pantry stable milk (Parmalat), breakfast cereal, mac & cheese, canned fruit including applesauce, pasta, crackers, chips, or other snack items.
Sunday Fellowship:
Our gatherings after the 10:15 AM worship are hosted by you every week. However, there have been no volunteers for the entire summer to host this important community time. Please consider sharing your favorite items with us this summer. If you’ve never done it – we’ll be there to help! Thanks for keeping this amazing sharing time going.
With praise and thanksgiving,
Pastor Tina 🙂
