Summer at the Movies: Raising Helen

Summer at the Movies: Raising Helen:

In the second to last week of our summer series, we will focus on how God calls unlikely people to be his servants.  We begin in Exodus, where five women defy the Pharaoh and save a young boy’s life.  Our movie, “Raising Helen”, is a story about a woman who is asked to raise her sister’s children, a request that seems unlikely for a motivated single woman with a busy social life.  God doesn’t call perfect or even the most educated or normal (its true) people – God calls us as we are to be the hands and feet of amazing things.  This message is extremely important, especially as we watch the world in anguish and wonder – what can I do.

Connections 4 Community(C4C) & SOTH
Five years ago, a group of women wondered how they could help to support the local food pantries and shelters.  They also liked to coupon. So they began to shop for the incidentals that pantries and agencies couldn’t provide and they did it well.  Then another question: how can we help others learn to do this for themselves? So cooking with coupons began. And they continue to support 42 agencies in 3 counties, often quadrupling donation money.  And so what began as Coupons for Community is now Connections for the Community.

SOTH has been working with C4C to provide meeting and storage space.  We are also negotiating a building use agreement so that C4C has a place to call home. And this is Good News because we have much to learn and share with each other!

This Saturday, C4C will distribute 300 backpacks to children in need who have been identified through teh SEC Food Pantry.  There will also be a picnic for them, haircuts for school, and a clothes closet.  All of this will happen on the front lawn of SOTH.  Please pray for these folks as they witness the Gospel – and as we work to be partners in helping the most vulnerable in the area.

You can find more information about C4C by visiting theirwebsite.

Building Improvements:
You might have noticed that things are changing a bit around here.

A new water heater was installed by Jim Perara and John Seal as it was determined that the old one was half full of silt and other minerals. It’s most noticeable in the kitchen as we wash up after coffee hour!

There are holes and caution tape in the yard as we are doing preventive maintenance work on our septic system.  Two tanks have been cleaned and we have one more to go. Please keep away from this area until the tape/fence are taken away.

The education hallway is being painted in bright colors and will be ready in time for our Faith Formation classes. All the doors in the education wing now have windows as well. Dan Wilour and Neil Anderson have been sharing their painting and carpentry skills. As time permits, the classroom will also be painted.

As we approach winter, we will be insulating and labeling all the water pipes, especially those in attic spaces. And we will continue with our fall yard clean up after the leaves come down.  Stay tuned for those dates and times.

Many thanks for the hands that have helped.  and Thanks in advance for the hands that will be shared in the future.

With praise and thanksgiving,
Pastor Tina 🙂
