Rallying to Rise up Together!
The sight of school supplies in the stores signal that a new season is coming. It brings me excitement – because I still love school supplies even though I no longer teach or am in school. And I am also excited because it means that a new program year at Shepherd of the Hills is just around the corner. And I can’t wait!
This year, our theme is “Rise Up Together!” This is also the theme of the ELCA National Youth Gathering in Detroit July 2015. It is fitting because as a community of faith, we rise up together to meet the needs and challenges before us. And together, we welcome, we are equipped, and then sent out to share the Good News.
When does this all happen? We kick off our year onSunday September 7 with a day of celebration and gathering and food. We like to call it Rally Day! Worship will be energetic, Faith Formation kicks off with a fun story and activities, and we will share a potluck picnic. We will also celebrate those who have shared their time and talents with the congregation – and I’m sure they will be happy to share why they continue to use their gifts.
Our 9:15 education hour is expanding to Adults as well. September will feature the beginning of a course titled “More than Money Matters” and will be led by Mark Kleindeinst. Mark is a financial planner and a representative for Thrivent Financial. Understanding and communicating how we value what God has given us are two important components that shape how we utilize them. And they are often the reasons why people have arguments.
The classes will start in the fall with discussions about “Stewardship & Values” as well as “Communicating about Money”. Mark will come back in the spring to finish the remaining modules. We’re splitting the class so that participants will have time to use the tools that they learn – determining values and communicating – before heading into goal setting, credit and debt, saving, and budgeting.
September 10 marks the return of Wednesday Brown Bag Bible Study at noon. We will pick up our study of the Gospel of Matthew.
Confirmation Orientation is also on September 10 at 7 PM This session is mandatory for all students!
A Fall Session of Communion Preparation will begin on Monday September 15 at 6:30 PM.
And there are more opportunities that I’ll continue to share in the weekly email with you all!
Blessings, Pastor Tina +
