Grace and peace to you, Beloved, wherever you are.

But we had hoped he was the one…

As the disciples are walking and talking with the stranger on the way to Emmaus, they share the loss of their dream. The one who they thought was the Messiah, who would restore the kingdom of Israel, died. And they are headed back to what had been before.

But we had hoped…sounds familiar.  We had hoped that the COVID 19 virus would come and go.  We had hoped for vacations and graduations and new jobs and grand parties.  We had hoped we could go back to normal by now…and our hopes are dashed or deferred.

Jesus met those disciples where they were – on that road of dashed hopes and told them the story of God’s love for God’s people from the beginning.  As they reach their destination, and it is night, the disciples invited the stranger in for a meal.  In the ritual of taking the bread, giving thanks, breaking it, and sharing it – they were reminded of the promise and they knew…

He was the one.

Not in the way they expected, but in a way that was much larger then their hopes and dreams.  What about this story will carry you through the sorrow and disappointment of our time right now?  What about this story, this encounter, brings you hope?
