Thanksgiving at the Water Font

Water is an essential element in our lives.  Without water, we die. I never gave water a lot of thought as a kid because I lived in a city with a great public water system.  I thought my dad was just being mean when he’d yell about using too much water (‘Save some for the fish,” I’d hear.)  It wasn’t until I was eight and in Puerto Rico for the first time that I truly understood why this was such an issue. Water was not to be taken for granted. IT could be there one minute and turned off the next.

Water – safe, clean, abundant water, is an issue that we are confronted with here in Sparta, in places where the drinking water is testing high with lead levels, in places where folks walk miles a day for clean water to drink & cook with.

And that’s what was happening in the Gospel lesson for this week.  A woman is walking to the town well for her household’s water.  She is confronted by a strange man, who wants a drink – but then offers living water that will quench her thirst. (This a really short summary of John 4…I invite you to read it before worship on Sunday).

Water is also an important element in the Sacrament of Baptism.  We give thanks for water and it’s importance throughout God’s story. It is through water and the Word that sins are forgiven and a new name is given.  And we rejoice as we welcome another brother into God’s family this weekend.

Whoever you are and wherever you find yourself on your faith journey, know that you are most welcome here.

Worship on Sundays is at 8 & 10:15 AM & 6 PM.

By the way – our initial plarn making time went well!  We still have bags & directions for you to take part in the this neat and important project!  You’re invited to work on this here during coffee hour or at home. The plastic yarn will be used to making sleeping mats for the homeless.

In Christ,
